Access to this medieval market town was formerly through two entrance gates, one at each end of the town, which was protected by a semi-circular fortified enclosure.
The abutment of St Symphorien Gate is still visible from Antonin Chanoz square.
The Murine Gate (facing the Maurienne mountain range) was located at the top of the steps in Rue Blanche.
In the past, only one trading street crossed the fortified town. It was called the « Grand Vie » and is today renamed Rue Ravier as a tribute to the famous painter.
